Yuanzai in the running for two Giant Panda Zoo Awards

TAIPEI -- Taipei Zoo yesterday encouraged panda lovers to support Taiwan's first giant panda cub, Yuanzai, by casting their ballots for the nearly 6-month-old baby girl in online voting for the Giant Panda Zoo Awards.

Yuanzai is currently the second-runner in the Panda Cub of the Year category as of Dec. 29, trailing behind only twins Mei Lun and Mei Huan from Zoo Atlanta in the United States.

Despite her recent bursts of energy and enthusiasm for climbing in her enclosure, the cub could use a helping hand to pull ahead in the Panda Personality of 2013 (“The Bear”) category, where she ranks fifth out of fifth.

Voting will continue on the Giant Panda Zoo website, founded by Belgian panda enthusiast Jeroen Jacobs, until Jan. 14.

Yuanzai, the child of panda dad Tuan Tuan and mom Yuan Yuan, has grown to 13.8 kilos and is scheduled to make her public debut at Taipei Zoo on Jan. 6, her 6-month birthday.
