TAIPEI -- A local charity urged the public Thursday to donate to help raise Lunar New Year red envelope money and other funds for disadvantaged families in which one of the spouses is a new immigrant.
The Pearl S. Buck Foundation in Taipei hopes to distribute 350 red envelopes, each containing NT$600 (US$19), to children from these families as traditional Lunar New Year gifts, said Hsiao Hsiu-ling, executive director of the foundation.
So far, the foundation is still short of 240 envelopes, Hsiao said.
She added that her organization is also trying to raise NT$300,000 to be used as scholarships and education aid for children and youths from these families, as well as NT$2 million to cover other services.
“We hope to improve our services to these families through the help of society,” said Hsiao.
The foundation serves families with a foreign spouse, mostly from Southeast Asia. It currently assists 160 such families, including over 300 children, Hsiao said.
Meanwhile, the foundation has already raised funds to organize a 50-table Lunar New Year banquet for the families in February.
