New MRT line sees over 10 million users in month

TAIPEI--A one-month free ride campaign celebrating the inauguration of the Taipei metro system's Xinyi Line has attracted some 11.5 million passengers, the Taipei Rapid Transit Corp. said yesterday.

The passengers have saved a combined total of around NT$62 million (US$2 million) thanks to the free rides that ran through Monday, the company said.

The company said the line, which extends metro travel from downtown areas to Xiangshan on the eastern outskirts of the city, also helped reduce passenger load on the Bannan Line, which runs partially parallel to the Xinyi Line.

Passenger load on the Bannan Line has dropped by 17.9 percent to 413,000 per day since the opening of the Xinyi Line, the company said.

Major transfer stations on the Xinyi Line help transfer a total of about 140,000 passengers on a typical weekday, it said.
