Grace period for YouBike demerit plan

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- YouBike members will have a monthlong grace period for adopting the new demerit system which will start on Jan. 1, said Taipei City Government spokesman Chang Chi-chiang (張其強) after the city government's weekly meeting yesterday.

According to Cheng, the commissioner of Department of Transportation (DOT, 台北市交通局) Wang Shang-wei (王聲威) pointed out that punishment is not the main goal of the demerit system. The DOT is not only providing a better environment for both cyclists and pedestrians but also trying to develop a bicycle culture in Taipei City, Wang also stated.

Chang further explained that a grace period will be helpful for YouBike members in adopting the new demerit system. Instead of being issued points, people who violate regulations will only be admonished during the grace period.
