Now in its ninth year, the festival, to be held in the entryway of Taipei Expo Park's Yuanshan Park Area, will include beef noodle competitions and an area for vendors where visitors can try award-winning noodles for NT$50 (US$1.7), the Taipei city government said.
The highlight of this year's festival will be an international challenge happening for the firt time, in which nine foreign contestants will showcase their noodle secrets.
Three local winners from previous competitions will be competing with chefs from countries including the United States, India and Singapore.
Government officials said they hope to generate business for local vendors, adding that beef noodles created revenue of over NT$1.1 billion last year, compared with NT$780 million in 2008.
Cheng Cheng-chung, deputy director-general of the Taipei New Row Mian Interflow Develop Association, said the festival plays an important role in branding beef noodles.
“Hopefully the festival can help us reach more Chinese tourists,”Cheng said, adding that this demographic has become a major source of income for beef noodle vendors.
Working with over 30 local travel agencies to include sampling ofthe dish on Chinese tourists' itineraries, Cheng said the association is catering to some 600 Chinese visitors per day.
