One-handed woman suspected of covering up car accidentBy Ann Yu, The China Post TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Police suspect a 46-year-old female driver of covering up for her husband after she admitted to causing a car accident even though she has no right hand.
January 21, 2013, 12:02 am TWN The female driver, reportedly surnamed Chiu, admitted to crashing into a motorcyclist in Miaoli, at the Hsinkang Bridge. The biker was sent to the hospital immediately for emergency care. Police are skeptical of Chiu's testimony as her husband was given a DUI test with a result of 0.7 mg and because she was naturally born without a right hand. The police found pieces of a bumper, a motorcycle and a tire near the accident scene but no driver. They said that Chiu later drove to the scene and confessed that she was the perpetrator of the accident. Chiu explained that the fog was heavy that night, causing her to mistakenly drive in the wrong direction without notice and thus crashed into a motorcyclist. Chiu said that after the incident, she dialed for an ambulance and drove a few meters away because she felt nervous. After their investigation, prosecutors decided to charge Chiu for intentional hit-and-run, granting her a bail of NT$150,000. Prosecutors will look further into the case to see if Chiu is covering up for her husband. |
