'Walking Dead' star Reedus welcomed by screaming fans

TAIPEI--Around 200 excited fans, many dressed as zombies, greeted American actor Norman Reedus in Taipei on Sunday as he arrived at a fan event to promote the zombie TV series hit “The Walking Dead.”

Reedus, who plays Daryl Dixon, a motorcycle-riding, crossbow-wielding zombie killer in the drama series, greeted his fans outside the event's venue at Huashan 1914 Creative Park on a motorcycle.

Once inside the venue, the actor held up his camera several times to take photos of his fans and the media and said he was “very excited” to be in Taiwan, which he called a “cool place.”

“I've never been here before,” said the actor, who has visited Japan, China and South Korea in the past. “I'm excited to see as much as possible.”

When asked why Daryl Dixon is so popular with fans, Reedus said it was because Dixon is a very honest and loyal character.

“I think the thing about Daryl is he wears his heart on his sleeve,” the 44-year-old actor said.

As for whether he resembles Dixon in real life, Reedus joked and said “I'm a lot like Daryl. I am socially awkward. I'm super shy.”

Based on a comic book series, “The Walking Dead” is about a group of survivors who wander the Southern Gothic landscape after a zombie apocalypse.

Dixon, one of the survivors and a redneck hunter, was initially portrayed as a short-tempered loner but he has evolved into one of the leaders of the group.

Leah Fan, 24, and her friend Fly Hsu, 23, both dressed in Chinese zombie costumes, said they came to the event to show the American actor “what an Oriental zombie looks like.”

Calling Reedus one of her favorite actors, Fan said she likes the drama series because of its exciting and well-knit plot.

The ninth episode of season three of the series will be aired on Feb. 14 on the Star Movies channel.

The actor is scheduled to leave Taiwan for Japan on Jan. 22.

Leah Fan and Fly Hsu? Can it get anymore ridiculous and embarrassing for Taiwan? These are not proper names but just plain childish. There is nothing wrong with simply Romanizing a Chinese name.
