Box office shows renewed interest in Taiwan moviesCNA TAIPEI--Box office receipts in Taipei for Taiwan-made films soared in 2011 thanks to a rekindled interest in locally produced movies and a blockbuster hit, a government agency said yesterday.
November 21, 2012, 12:44 am TWN The Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics (DGBAS) said Taiwan-made films had receipts of NT$710 million (US$24.4 million) in 2011 at first-run theaters in Taipei, 120 percent higher than their box office numbers the previous year. They also had a 17.5-percent share of receipts for all films shown in Taipei, up from 7.3 percent in 2010. The blockbuster hit “Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale” was a major contributor to the soaring growth rates, generating NT$300 million at the box office in Taipei. The DGBAS said the rising success of locally made films in 2011 continued a trend seen in recent years that is being driven by better directors, producers, screenwriters and actors and actresses as well as incentives provided by the government.
