Hau focuses on islands at anniversary celebrations

TAIPEI--Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin presided over a Diaoyutai-themed national flag raising ceremony outside City Hall Wednesday and then completed a road run to celebrate Double Tenth Day.

Using the occasion to assert Taiwan's sovereignty over the Diaoyutai Islands, Hau said he was deeply moved by the group of fishermen from Yilan County who made a protest voyage to the islands in late September to assert Taiwan's fishing rights in the area.

The mayor urged people in Taiwan to express their support for their country on the issue peacefully and let the international community know that the “Diaoyutai Islands belong to the Republic of China.”

Hau spoke in front of two large posters hanging from the Taipei City Hall building — one with the national flag of the Republic of China and another asserting sovereignty over the East China Sea islands.
