Up to 51% of male adults in Taipei are overweight

The China Post news staff-- One in two Taipei citizens aged over 18 is overweight, compared to one third of all female adults, according to statistics released yesterday by the Department of Health under the Taipei City Government.

The same tallies showed that one quarter of under-age Taipei citizens have to reduce their weight.

Accordingly, "reducing weight" has virtually become a campaign for almost all the citizens in Taipei, Lin Li-ju, a division chief of the city's health department, said at an exercise walking campaign held yesterday.

Lin said that up to 44 percent of adults in Taiwan are overweight, and the corresponding ratios for male adults in Taipei reached a high of 51 percent, much higher than 36 percent for female adults.

She said that obesity will lead to such diseases as diabetes, metabolic syndrome, dyslipidemia, hypertension and gout, and chances are also high that obese people will suffer coronary artery disease, breast cancer, endometrial carcinoma and colon cancer.

The Department of Health under the Taipei City Government yesterday launched an exercise walking campaign to "declare war" on obesity. Over 100 residents of Zhongshan District, led by Chi Cheng, president of the Hope Cultural & Educational Foundation, engaged in fitness walking by the flower parks used at the 2010 Taipei international flora exposition.

Chi Cheng said that according to a statement issued by the World Health Organization in 1992, exercise walking is the best health-promotion sport. She reminded nationals of make it a daily practice to do exercise walking of at least 10,000 steps.

Have you seen the Taiwanese children under 10 lately? It's disgusting. How is it possible parents do not notice their fat children? Or is it that you in Taiwan want to show off you got money and can feed their child food (We are wealthy look at our child). Disgusting!
