Excessive pesticide found in 20% of Taipei vegetables

Around 20 percent of vegetable and fruit products sold in Taipei were found to contain excessive amounts of pesticide residue, according to the findings of a survey released yesterday by the Taipei City Government's Department of Health.

The department recently completed examinations of 73 vegetable and fruit samples offered by retailers and supermarkets, and found pesticide residue in 46 of them, including 13 samples containing higher pesticide residues than allowable limits.

Taipei health officials said that those vegetable and fruit products with excessive pesticide residues were found at traditional retail outlets, popular supermarkets such as Wellcome, Pxmart, Carrefour and a.mart.

Even some vegetable products with the GAP (Good Agricultural Practice) certification mark were found to contain excessive pesticides.

Of the 13 problem vegetable and fruit products, cucumbers sold at a Neihu branch of the Wellcome Supermarket were found to have excessive residues of three pesticides, namely Chlorfenapyr, Pyraclostrobine, and Lufenuron, making it the "most poisonous vegetable" retailed in Taipei.

The Taipei City Department of Health has asked dealers to remove all the problem vegetables and fruit products from their sales racks, and will impose fines of NT$60,000 to NT$600,000 on suppliers of the products for violating the Act Governing Food Sanitation.

AND YOU'RE WORRIED ABOUT AMERICAN BEEF? Give the intelligent people a break!

Why blame this on the retailers, when it is the farmers who are thoughtlessly using poisons and the government cheering them on? Oh, right, because otherwise they'd have to leave the 1950's behind and update their farming methods. Can't have that, can we?

Completely agree with u. Those who are against the American Beef were the losers in the last election. They even violated the rules of law and the democratic process to vote by occupying the Legislative Yuan and the seat of the speaker.

DISGUSTING! I'd rather have my 100% all American porter house!
