Tainan university allows leave of absence for 'alien abduction'The freshman filed an application for the leave because he was unable to go to a class for two hours on Dec. 15. In the application form, he wrote down that he was held hostage and taken away by aliens from an unnamed planet as the reason for his absence. The school administration gave its approval on the computer system the following day. But the event soon became hot news on the campus drawing attention from local media. Some students wondered whether there are school rules concerning attack from aliens for legitimate absence from school. Following questioning by reporters, the student filed a new application and changed the reason for his leave to “discomfort” without explaining whether the aliens had showed up. The school also gave its approval immediately in order to put the whole event aside as early as possible. The students said that he used “aliens” as a reason for leave simplified for fun without malicious attentions. But school administrators expressed regrets over the incident. They explained that one new staff member just joined the school only a couple of weeks ago had mistakenly pushed a wrong computer key for the electronic document because she was not familiar with the computerized system yet. Nevertheless, they said steps will be taken to avoid similar incidents or pranks by students in the future.
