Iced snacks and beverages found unsafe: Taipei city governmentThe Department of Health under Taipei City randomly inspected 54 ingredients often added in soft drinks and iced sweets sold in teashops, and found three of them fell short. These three items were found to contain high levels of sorbic acid, a type of food preservative unfit for consumption, said the city's Food and Drug Division Director Chen Li-chi. The failure rate was 5.6 percent. The ingredients deemed unsafe are the famous marble-sized black tapioca balls, taro beads and konyaku, a long strand of chewy jelly widely consumed in Asia. The officials have ordered the three unqualified products be removed from the shelves and destroyed, and fined one of the three providers who is registered in the city. The officials called for food manufacturers to regulate themselves under the Act Governing Food Sanitation. They reminded the public that violators will face a fine between NT$30,000 and NT$150,000. | |||||||||||||
