Songshan Airport's Terminal 2 to open for domestic flights Tuesday

A renovated Terminal 2 of Taipei Songshan Airport will be reserved for domestic flights only upon its scheduled reopening on March 29. Meanwhile, Terminal 1 will service only international flight passengers, airport officials said yesterday.

The airport will begin informing passengers today and will post announcements inside and outside Terminal 1 on March 28 to remind people of the upcoming changes. It will also dispatch manpower to guide confused passengers on March 29.

The revamped Terminal 2 can accommodate a maximum of 2.8 million visitors a year and will be equipped with convenience stores and coffee shops, officials said. In addition, an observatory at the airport and its accompanying coffee shop will began service in July.

In related news, the renovation of the exterior of Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport Terminal 1 will be completed in August, airport executives said yesterday.

Passengers at Taiwan's biggest international airport surged 20 percent to reach a record 25 million last year, said Samuel Lin (林鵬良), president of Taoyuan International Airport Corp. (TIA), the newly established state-run business managing the airport.

In cooperation with the private sector, TIA is providing more diverse services such as Hello Kitty-themed rooms and an electronic library featuring 2,000 second-hand books and foreign magazines, as well as passenger-friendly services such as chargers for over 10 different brands of cell phones.

The TIA aims to make Taoyuan Airport one of the top ten international airports in three years, said Lin and TIA Chairman Yeh Kuang-shih (葉匡時).

Duty-free shops in the airport, on the other hand, do not have to wait three years as they were already ranked the eighth best in the world by American travel magazine Global Traveler in 2010, ahead of those in major global hubs such as London Heathrow Airport and all airports in mainland China.
