MRT extension connecting Bannan, Wenhu completed

The China Post news staff--The Taipei City Government yesterday announced the completion of the MRT Bannan Line extension, which links the blue line to the Wenhu Line and brings convenience to residents of Nangang, Neihu and Xizhi as they commute to downtown Taipei.

In a news conference yesterday morning, Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin lauded the project, which he said would cut travel time from the Nangang Exhibition Center to Taipei Railway Station to 20 minutes.

Both the brown Wenhu Line and the Bannan Line end in the eastern Taipei district of Nangang. However, the critical one-kilometer linkage between the terminal stations of both lines had been missing for years, causing inconvenience for local commuters seeking to transfer between both rail systems.

"Now, this 'last-kilometer linkage' has been completed, joining two of the MRT's busiest and most popular lines," Hau said. "In the future, residents of Nangang and Neihu Districts as well as Xizhi District of New Taipei City will have an easier time traveling to downtown Taipei."

With the completion of the project, commuters of the Wenhu Line can get off at the Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center station and transfer to the blue line downstairs, which will subsequently take them to the city's bustling Dongqu or eastern area, the Taipei Railway Station which services both Taiwan Railway Administration and the Taiwan High-Speed Rail, and the New Taipei City districts of Banqiao and Tucheng.

The Nangang Exhibition Center station has a shell-shaped exterior and features barcode-style paintings, in keeping with the station's high-tech theme, said Chen Chuang-liang, chief of the MRT Bureau.
