Court upholds cigarette fine for teenage student

TAIPEI, Taiwan — The parents of an 18-year-old student have lost an appeal to the highest administrative court over an NT$10,000 anti-smoking fine for their son, a report said yesterday.

The student, surnamed Chang, was given the fine by health officials for offering a cigarette to a 17-year-old friend last year, according to the Apple Daily.

The law punishes anyone who provides cigarettes to the underaged, but Chang's parents argued that since their son was still a student with no money to pay the fine, they would have to pay for him.

Claiming they were the ones who were actually punished, the parents filed an appeal with the administrative court against the fine.

But the court recently handed down a final verdict against their appeal, saying the fine assessed by the health officials was legitimate although it was the underage person who asked their son for the cigarette.
