Chen's son refutes magazine's report

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Chen Chi-chung, son of ex-President Chen Shui-bian, stressed yesterday that he will not retreat from the year-end election despite the repeated attacks from Next magazine.

Chen made the remarks at a press conference held yesterday morning in response to the latest report by Next magazine that it has held solid evidence against Chen's alleged involvement in the sex trade.

In its latest issue published yesterday, the weekly magazine reported that although the mobile phone numbers used by Chen and the man suspected of calling prostitutes and resembling Chen were not the same, they shared the same serial number, indicating that Chen and the suspect used the same mobile phone set.

In addition, the magazine reported that it sent audio recording data of the suspected client and recording of Chen's TV talks to the U.S. for print recognition tests, and the result is that the voices of the two are highly similar to each other.

In response, Chen said at the press conference that after consulting with his lawyer, they found the process of voice print recognition tests quite rigid, far from the reckless process as described by Next magazine in its latest report.

Chen called for Next magazine to present all the evidence to the court session directly, so that both sides can “fight” each other under the law. Chen continued that the repeated reports on the controversial sex-trade case were nothing but a political suppression, aimed at forcing him to withdraw from the year-end election in the Kaohsiung Municipality.

Accordingly, Chen stressed he will fight it out to win the final victory in the election regardless of the reports.

Chen's father has been detained at the Taipei Detention House for almost two years on charges of corruption and money laundering.
