Taipei to hold local snack eating contest for foreigners

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A contest designed for foreigners to enjoy the fun of eating local snack foods will kick off at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 11, at the Aqua Sports Plaza in downtown Taipei, according to the organizers.

The activity is part of the efforts by the Research, Development and Evaluation Commission (RDEC) to promote the English-service certification mark among relevant sectors, such as night markets. It will be carried out by the Gongguan night market community, which has just won the said certification mark from the RDEC, under the assistance of the China Productivity Center.

RDEC officials said that as night markets are now popular targets of visits by inbound foreign tourists, and therefore it is quite imperative for night market operators to offer English services to such tourists so as to attract their patronage.

Accordingly, the RDEC has joined forces with local governments to enforce English service certification system to help operators of local night market stands offer better services to inbound foreign tourists, allowing the tourists to better enjoy delicious snack foods and develop deeper impression of Taiwan.

Chou Li-hua, a representative of the Gongguang night market community, said foreigners attending the Saturday contest can enjoy quite a few delicious specialty snack foods, including “pig blood cake” and “stinky toufu.”
