Luzhou MRT line may open ahead of schedule

Officials with the Department of Rapid Transit Systems (DORTS) under the Taipei City Government said yesterday that the opening of the new Luzhou Line on the city's mass rapid transit (MRT) system could be brought forward from the original start date of Dec 31 this year.

The officials made the remarks when conducting initial inspection of the new MRT line.

There will be 11 stations along the Luzhou Line, including six in Taipei City and five in Taipei County, spanning 12.5 kilometers.

After the new MRT line becomes operational, it will take 22 minutes to travel from Luzhou to Taipei Main Station by transferring to the Tamsui Line at Minquan West Road Station.

Meanwhile, passengers can spend 19 minutes traveling from Luzhou to Zhongxiao Xinsheng Station of the Banqiao-Nangang Line, where the two lines are connected.

DORTS officials said that the Ministry of Transportation and Communications has approved Dec. 31 as the inauguration date for the Luzhou MRT Line, but the datecould be brought forward.

Meanwhile, the Xinzhuang MRT line is scheduled to become operational by the end of 2014, the officials said.
