Smoke from factory fire in Taipei County disturbs flights

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- More than 160 firefighters and police officers were called to a fire in Sanchong City, Taipei County, last night, which sent up smoke that could be seen from Taipei City and disturbed flights at the Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport.

The blaze broke out at around 6:00 p.m. in a detergent factory and quickly spread through the 1,000 ping (1 ping = 3.3 square meters) plant, fueled by the inflammable chemicals stored inside. In total, 165 firefighters, police officers and volunteers were dispatched to put out the flare and to prevent it from spreading to surrounding factories. Fifty-nine vehicles, including chemical fire engines, were sent to the fire.

"Extinguishing the fire would take time considering the large quantity of chemicals stored in the factory," the Taipei County Fire Department said, adding that there were no reports of people killed, injured or trapped.
