Single Taipei workers spend more than half of income on rent: gov't

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- According to a recent study, singles working in Taipei City spend up to 60 percent of their monthly salary on rent, according to figures released recently by the government statistic agency.

The research showed that the first quarter's average monthly pay of a full-time worker is NT$36,000 in Taiwan, while college graduates' salaries start at about NT$22,000, the numbers by the Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics has shown.

When the amount of the average salary was put against the current renting prices in northern, central, and southern Taiwan, a “stress index” was received, local reporters explained.

The stress index for a single person was the highest in Taipei City, then Taipei County, Taichung City, and lastly, Kaohsiung City, they continued.

Taipei City turned out to be 61 percent, while Taipei County was 38 percent, Taichung City 33 percent, and Kaohsiung City was 24 percent.

Families with two incomes in Taipei City appeared to be suffering as well, with a stress level of approximately 30 percent, the research showed.

Experts recommend those who wish to save money to find housemates and rent apartments together, or move to more-remote residential areas and commute to work, local reporters said.
