TAIPEI -- Shazhu Bay, which lies next to Taipei County's coastal Jinshan township, is currently the only surfing area accessible to the public in northern Taiwan.
The bay, which is now part of Taiwan's North Coast and Guanyinshan National Scenic Area, was at one time jointly administered by three different government units. But it was poorly managed then.
Now it is solely governed by the North Coast and Guanyinshan National Scenic Area Administration, which has turned Shazhu Bay into a favorite spot for surfers and those who love water activities.
The administration has set up a program with an ultimate goal to preserve the natural state of the north coast, clean the environment and improve safety.
The administration's staff has repainted and repaired a cabin long located in the beach area and turned it into an office for lifeguards.
The whole beach area and facilities have now been leased to a firm that offers a wide range of services, including surfing lessons, daytime security, safety equipment supply, and meals.
The lease contract is valid for two years from May 1, 2010 through April 30, 2012.
For more information, the administration can be reached at 02-8635-5100 (voice) or 02-8635-5155 (fax).
