Taiwan builds world's first plastic-bottle structure

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The world's first green building made of plastic bottles will be used as one of the 14 exhibition halls at the 2010 Taipei International Flora Expo, starting from Nov. 6, local media reported yesterday.

Douglas Hsu (徐旭東), chairman of the Far Eastern Group (FEG) yesterday unveiled EcoARK (環生方舟), a 130-meter-long green structure built with 1.5 million recycled plastic bottles and environmental-friendly architectural techniques, based on the three goals of "Reduce, Reuse and Recycle."

The NT$300 million green building made entirely in Taiwan by the FEG can withstand strong typhoons, powerful earthquakes and holds seven world records in green construction.

EcoARK is the world's lightest, movable, breathable environmental miracle, Hsu said. It can be taken apart and reassembled at another site after the exposition; it is probably the most eco-friendly exposition hall in the expo, Hsu added.

More than 2.4 billion plastic bottles are trashed annually in Taiwan, but only 4 percent of them are recycled and reused, Hsu explained, adding that plastic bottles do not dissolve and would become a permanent burden for the environment if we can find new ways to reuse them.

It's great to see Taiwan leading the way in innovative green architecture!

Very clever ... but what a weird statistic. Given that 80-90% of plastic bottles in Taiwan are collected in separate recycling bins, how is it that only 4% of them end up being reused? I've often wondered where that "recycling" truck actually goes. Now we know: the same landfill the garbage truck goes to.
