Taipei City to bid for 2019 Asian Games

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taipei City has beaten out Kaohsiung City and Taipei County for the right to represent Taiwan in bidding to host the 2019 Asian Games, the Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee (CTOC) said yesterday.

The decision was made less than two weeks before the March 31, 2010 deadline for submitting applications to host the 2019 and 2023 Asian Games.

A total of 14 committee members voted Monday in a vote officiated by CTOC honorary chairman Chang Feng-hsu to decide which city should represent Taiwan. Taipei City received 221 points, ahead of Kaohsiung City's 207 and Taipei County's 171.

Chen Hsien-tsung, deputy minister of the Sports Affairs Council, attributed Taipei City's victory mainly to its convenient transportation network, high international visibility, well-developed public facilities, and the fact that major construction projects related to sports development will have been completed by 2019.

The Olympic Council of Asia is scheduled to vote on which country will be awarded the right to host the 2019 Asian Games in April 2011.

So far Vietnam, Singapore, the Philippines, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, and Dubai have all expressed their intention to bid for the games.

Based on the normal four-year rotation, the Asian Games should have been held in 2018, but the Olympic Council of Asia decided in 2009 to move future Games to one year before the Summer Olympics.
