Child troupes honor Confucious with danceThree groups from Taiwan elementary schools — two from Taipei City and one from Tainan City — and one from Sungkyunkwan University in Seoul, South Korea, dressed in ancient Chinese costume and performed the ancient Ba Yi dance, a tradition featuring eight rows of eight dancers each. Speaking before the performance, Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin said the dance and the five-day conference were meant to stress the importance of respecting teachers and education. Kung Tsui-chang, the 79th-generation descendant of Confucius, said that he hoped the international exchange would help revive an interest in Confucianism. The Taipei City government said a similar dance will be staged Saturday at Confucius Temple in Taipei's Datong District as part of the Spring Worship ceremony, which is held annually to honor the deceased. The conference, hosted by the Taipei City government, runs from March 18-22 and has drawn about 200 participants from six countries. | ||||||||||||||||||||
