Military fans excited at boarding real battleship

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taiwan's Navy 131st Fleet based in Keelung Harbor in northern Taiwan was opened to visitors Saturday, drawing a crowd of military hardware buffs who eagerly boarded the Knox-class frigate “Yiyang” for a tour.

It was the first time the Navy put the Yiyang — one of the country's main battleships — on public display.

The ship, which can accommodate 200 sailors, is equipped with a SQS-26CZ sonar system, Harpoon missiles, a 5-inch/54 caliber gun, and anti-submarine rockets.

Visitors were given guided tours of the ship by naval personnel who explained the functions of its equipment and weapons. Children were even allowed to enter the control cabin to see what it's like to navigate a military ship.

Also on display was the 500-ton patrol vessel “Kao Chiang,” which is responsible for conducting coastal patrols and logistical missions in waters surrounding Taiwan.
