Man sentenced to over 13 years for killing girlfriend

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A man was yesterday sentenced to 13 years and three months for killing his girlfriend in Taipei County and unlawful disposal of a body.

Li Ming-te was found guilty for strangling his live-in girlfriend, surnamed Yang, in their rented apartment last August. Li killed Yang because he suspected her of cheating on him after she asked to end their relationship.

After committing the crime, Li transported the victim's body in a large travel tote via taxi, buses and motorcycle to Caotun Township in Nantou County for disposal by a secluded farm road.

Police reviewed video footage from nearby surveillance cameras and tracked down Li by the license plate of the motorcycle that he rode after farmers reported the body.

Nantou district court sentenced Li to 12 years imprisonment for the killing, 10 months for unlawful disposal of a body and another four and three months for stealing the victim's mobile phone and accessories respectively, with a total of 13 years and 3 months to be served.

The case is open to appeal.
