The foreign student was given a major demerit and was deprived of his dorm accommodation. Though the victim and her parents decided not to sue the foreign student, some students complained that the school gave him too lenient a punishment. They said the school had treated local and foreign students unequally. Foreign students get better dorms and they can smoke in the rooms. NCCU said they had not been partial to foreign students. Responding to students' demand of announcing the foreign student's name, the school said they never make the names of students who have received demerits public. Gau had a four-hour meeting with NCCU's dean of student affairs, dean of general affairs and dean of academic affairs on Monday. She also met with NCCU's principal, and representatives from the student union and gender equality association. Gau said she would investigate whether the punishment given was adequate, the school's handling of the case appropriate, means of complaints sufficient, and management of the dormitories was fair. She would also look into ways to improve the security of the dormitories. Subscribe to The China Post and save 25%. Click here |
