Taipei cabs come with wireless Web services

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Watching online breaking news, surfing the Internet, playing mobile games and even voting online in a taxi are no longer just dreams for cab passengers in Taipei.

Up to 1,000 taxis in the greater Taipei area have been equipped with WiMAX Internet and wireless broadband, allowing them to offer passengers a wide range of free Internet services in a groundbreaking application of WiMAX technology.

The 4G WiMAX cab services — the first of their kind in the world — will satisfy passenger demand during their rides, said the operator of a Taipei City-based taxi company at a news conference Tuesday.

The operator said that thanks to the cutting-edge 4G WiMAX technology, passengers can enjoy super speed Internet services via the touch screen of a WiMAX infrastructure in the vehicle.

Passengers can check road maps and download discount coupons or movie information during their rides, he went on.

The on-board WiMAX service will also provide passengers with receipts for their rides, the owner said.

Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin praised the system at the news conference as a new source of pride for Taipei City.

The service will be free of charge to passengers in the initial stage, although the taxi company and the WiMAX technology provider will assess whether to charge a fee in the future.

The company said its service will be limited to the greater Taipei area, as its WiMAX coverage does not extend beyond northern Taiwan.
