Updated Tuesday, March 9, 2010 9:55 am TWN, The China Post news staff DPP councilor accuses gov't of workplace sexismLee questioned Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin on gender equality at a press conference on International Women's Day yesterday. Sixteen departments, including the Department of Environmental Protection and The Department of Rapid Transit System have breached the Gender Equality in Employment Act, according to Lee and her DPP colleague Wang Hsiao-wei. Citing the Department of Personnel as an example, they pointed out that there is only one woman among the 7 top managers, even though 70 percent of workers are female. Lee uses the excellence of Datong Police District Chief Tang Ming-zhu (湯明珠) as an example to demonstrate that many women can outperform men in managerial positions. Men and woman have equal abilities, responded Mayor Hau. Striving for promotional opportunities and improvement of work environments is a focus of his policies, he said. Hau gave thanks to female janitors working in the city government's building by distributing bouquets of roses. Women play an important part in society and family life, Hau stated. They take on many roles, working in the daytime and taking care of the family after work. He gave his blessings to all women and reminded men to cherish their female counterparts.
