Updated Wednesday, February 10, 2010 9:36 am TWN, The China Post news staff Two of the Taipei 101 robbers apprehendedThe police were able to track down a red Honda Civic used in the crime to Cheng Ting-peng, a 33-year-old car recycling plant owner and a member of the triad group Tien Dao Meng, in Taoyuan. Cheng admitted to the crime and was taken under custody by the police. Tipped off by Cheng, the authorities also apprehended his accomplice, a 60-year-old man named Yu Shun-chih, in Sijhih, Taipei County, and recovered the stolen BMW 740, worth approximately NT$4 million. Cheng, Yu and two other suspects on the run were responsible for carjacking the two women, surnamed Lu and Li, at the underground parking lot of the Taipei 101 building around 3:10 p.m. on Feb. 3. They robbed NT$240,000 in cash from the pair, drove the two in the sedan owned by Lu to the mountain area in Shenkeng, Taipei County, and dropped them off. After the four spent all the stolen money, Cheng planned to sell Lu's automobile, which he had refitted and had changed its license plate to avoid police detection. The pair chose their victims in-part because the BMW 740 is easier to sell than another automobile, an older BMW X6 that they also had put their eyes on. The city was shocked by the robbery, which took place in broad daylight at one of Taiwan's best known tourist hotspots. A taskforce was formed by the officers from the Criminal Investigation Division and the Xinyi Precinct of the Taipei City Police Bureau as well as the Taoyuan County Police Bureau. The authorities were able to track the red Civic the robbers used by identifying it from over 1,000 surveillance camera videos and run a thorough check of over 3,000 similar cars in Taiwan. In his commendation of the police officers, Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-pin commented that the police were able to quickly solve all of the six major criminal cases in Taipei in recent years, stressing that the city is no place for criminals to try their luck.
