Taipei County, Farglory join hands to cut CO2

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Taipei County Government has cooperated with the Farglory Group to set up three intelligent bus stop booths using solar energy as a move to enhance the campaign of cutting carbon emissions.

Officials in charge of transport services and environmental protection at the county government said Magistrate Chou Hsi-wei received the donation of the new facilities and equipment from Farglory, a leading conglomerate with extensive operations concerning construction, real estate development, recreation, and financial services.

The new bus top booths with thin-film solar energy panels plus smart bus stop signs showing service information are erected in Sanxia, Shulin, and Linkuo districts respectively.

This represents another successful showcase of combining the sources in public and private sectors to streamline the public transport networks in the ongoing campaign to promote renewable energy while reducing the emissions of carbon dioxide, Chou said.

Officials at the Department of Transportation said the county set up 11 bus stop booths powered by solar energy in 2009. A “photovoltaic recreational city” -- the first of its kind in Taiwan -- was also established last year to upgrade services for people taking ferry services at the wharves of Danshui, Bali and Fishermen's Wharf.

More projects will be carried out this year, including installing solar energy facilities at several city halls in the county, the Banqiao Bus Terminal, the Banqiao First Sport Stadium, and the Pinglin Tea Museum.

Ten additional battery recharging stations will be set up for owners of electric motorcycles and motor scooters in move to improve air quality.

The transport department will also continue the measures to create a more convenient and friendly environment for commuters to take the public transport systems like buses and the mass rapid transit (MRT) system.

Steps will be taken to more closely integrate the bus and MRT services in order to attract more users. Other planned moves include widening the roads and improve the traffic information services to encourage more commuters to choose the pubic transport service.

For people who opt for environmental friendly bicycles, the county government will expand the bikeway networks and set up more bicycle racks along streets.
