2nd police suicide seen in 10 days

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A policeman shot himself to death early yesterday at the Hsinsheng South Road police substation of the Daan Precinct in Taipei, marking Taiwan's second police shooting suicide in 10 days.

The suicide police was identified as Hsieh Chao-song, who had served in the force for 13 years. Hsieh was found to have shot himself in the mouth, which killed him immediately.

A prosecutor rushed to the Jen Ai Branch of the Taipei City Hospital to check Hsieh's remains and investigate the reasons behind his suicide.

Initial findings are that Hsieh was in bad mood in recent days, drinking alcohol to ease emotional troubles with his girlfriend.

The girlfriend, a pharmaceutist, has been pregnant for four months, and was going to be engaged to Hsieh on Feb. 28. The couple, who frequently quarreled over trifles, was originally preparing to pick up wedding rings on Friday.

Hsieh's colleagues said that Hsieh was required to be on duty Friday night through 9:00 a.m. yesterday, so that he could take Saturday off to discuss engagement affairs with his girlfriend's family members in southern Taiwan.

But soon after Hsieh got on duty at 12:07 a.m. yesterday, he shot himself to death, greatly shocking his colleagues.

After learning Hsieh's death, his father rushed to the Jen Ai hospital and told prosecutor that Hsieh called home saying that he felt sorry for parents and older sister.

The prosecutor will further investigate to see if there is any other reason leading to Hsieh's suicide.

In related news, Professor Yeh Yu-lan of the Taiwan Police University said that two police shooting suicide cases within 10 days indicates the great need for the police duties to be simplified and rationalized, so that they can find better outlets for their emotional sentiments.

Yeh said long working hours and irregular leaves will make rank and file police officers caught in bad moods, especially for those among the marriageable group.

I have been living in Taiwan for quite a few years. The only people who disturbed me in Taiwan are a few stupid police. One time while I was working part time in my university, one old police man came and made trouble with me. He was terribly drunk. There were other times I got checked to show my ID card by some stupid looking police even inside the campus. Many police I have seen here have alcohol problem especially old ones. Most of them have marriage problems. It's no surprising that many people suicide here. Even I feel like wanna suicide sometimes living here :D.
