County Magistrate Chou Hsi-wei said yesterday a fund of NT$160 million has been allocated from the county's budget programs. A total of 24,000 female students of the age of 13 will benefit from the program. This is part of the national cervical cancer awareness campaign launched by the central government to safeguard the health of women on the island. Officials from the Taiwan Counter Contagious Diseases Society praised the free vaccination offered to female residents in Taipei County, and noted that it should encourage other local administrators to quickly implement similar programs. They also encouraged other women of older age to take the vaccines for better protection. The medical experts estimated that it will cost around NT$1 billion to carry out a nationwide free vaccination program against cervical cancer.
