Man caught in mutilation life insurance fraud

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A male suspect confessed to having his hand cut off in an attempt to commit fraud and claim insurance payment on Saturday, according to the Central News Agency.

The 38-year-old suspect surnamed Jiang had his hand cut off outside a seafood restaurant late at night on Nov. 8 in Zhongho, Taipei County and was taken immediately to Shuanghe Hospital for treatment. The hand that was cut off was said to have been found under the Da-han Bridge on Friday and has been sent to the forensic science center to check for a DNA match.

The case was dismissed on Saturday morning, when Jiang and another suspect surnamed Chen came forward to the local authorities and confessed that they had devised the scheme in order to receive NT$13 million in insurance money. Investigators say that their conspiracy involved Chen paying another suspect Chang NT$50,000 to cut off Jiang's hand.

Since local authorities had already suspected Jiang of being behind the case, Jiang's confession and remorse did not spare him from receiving a prison sentence. The three suspects will be charged with causing severe injury and attempted fraud.
