Jewelry trader robbed of NT$10 million diamonds

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A jewelry merchant from India has been robbed of diamonds worth over NT$10 million in Taipei, police said yesterday.

Police have already alerted customs authorities to the robbery, trying to prevent the robbers from smuggling the diamonds out of Taiwan.

Shahdhanpal Manubhai, the wholesale trader, was riding a motorbike on his way home with the diamonds Friday night after a business meeting with a client.

He was carrying a backpack that contained diamonds with a market value of NT$10.98 million.

The jewelry merchant pulled over near Dunnan St. to answer a phone when a Mercedes Benz sedan stopped next to him. Four men got off the car and snatched his backpack, which contained the gems.

He injured his knee while fighting with the robbers.

The merchant has been living in Taiwan for about 10 years.

According to his statement to the police, Shahdhanpal had planned to ride home first before returning to his company to store the diamonds. When he was about to reach his home that was close to Dunnan Street, he stopped to take a phone call.

It was then that the car the robbers were in pulled up near him. The four men inside walked out of the vehicle and robbed him of his backpack before fleeing, the victim said.
