Birthday boy robs convenience store on whim

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- An ex-convict was yesterday arrested for holding up a convenience store in Taipei on his birthday, according to the United Evening News.

The 42-year-old suspect surnamed Li with a criminal record of drug possession robbed a convenience store with a toy gun and ran away with more than NT$2,000. Police apprehended the suspect not far from the crime scene.

Police probe revealed that Li was unemployed and borrowed NT$20,000 from a loan shark ten days ago with a repayment deadline of yesterday. After receiving a phone call from the creditor on Sunday evening, Li felt hopeless from inability to pay back the money.

Before his planned suicide, he celebrated his birthday alone in a park in Zhongshan District with a small cake until 3 a.m., according to Li's statement.

Investigation showed that the suspect entered the store pretending to be shopping for cigarettes. But seeing no other customers, he pulled a toy gun and demanded cash from the cashier.

Li got away with a total of NT$2,650 and a carton of cigarettes. The police in charge of the area arrived at the scene immediately after received the report. Officers later found the suspect not far away from the convenience store and arrested him.
