Police apprehended the suspect not far from the crime scene. Police probe revealed that Li was unemployed and borrowed NT$20,000 from a loan shark ten days ago with a repayment deadline of yesterday. After receiving a phone call from the creditor on Sunday evening, Li felt hopeless from inability to pay back the money. Before his planned suicide, he celebrated his birthday alone in a park in Zhongshan District with a small cake until 3 a.m., according to Li's statement. Investigation showed that the suspect entered the store pretending to be shopping for cigarettes. But seeing no other customers, he pulled a toy gun and demanded cash from the cashier. Li got away with a total of NT$2,650 and a carton of cigarettes. The police in charge of the area arrived at the scene immediately after received the report.
