Quick wit saves a woman from assault

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Without taekwondo or karate, a young woman successfully outsmarted an alleged sexual violator who broke into her room, local media reported yesterday.

This 20-something young woman, a piano bar waitress surnamed Huang, was slightly drunk after having some alcoholic drinks with female friends at a get-together on Sept. 15 and went straight to bed after arriving at her Taipei residence.

Huang woke up at 9:30 the next morning to weird sounds. Taken by surprise by a trespassing stranger, Huang yelled out.

The intruder, later identified as Chang Ming-yi, ignored her shouting, and pressed her into bed in an attempt to violate Huang.

Instead of fighting physically, Huang got away from Chang with her shrewdness. First she pretended to be vomiting from too much alcohol, and then she hid in the restroom and contemplated on how to escape.

Pretending to make friends, the victim picked up Chang's cell phone and dialed her own number to record Chang's caller identification in her own phone. After chatting for a while, quick-witted Huang proposed the suspect to take her out for some food.

While driving down Bade Road, Huang faked vomiting yet again, demanding Chang to pull over in front of a convenience store, where she could use its toilet. The minute Huang stepped into the convenience store, she asked the salesclerk to write down the car's license plate numbers and call the police.

Although police failed to arrest Chang that day, as he drove off immediately on seeing police, they nabbed him a week later based on his cell phone number, fingerprints that he left in the apartment and license plate number that the clerk jot down.

Chang allegedly broke into Huang's residence by a screwdriver in an attempt to steal something valuable, but changed his mind on seeing Huang dressed in merely a T-shirt and underwear, investigators said.

During police interrogation, Chang only admitted to caressing Huang, retorted that he was trying to violate her sexually because Huang had already agreed to be his girlfriend; prosecutors did not buy his words.
