Taipei MRT Danshui Line has troubles

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Taipei MRT seems to be suffering from an epidemic of breakdowns.

After the Wenhu Line went out of work twice on Wednesday, the Danshui Line had some trouble yesterday when the train stopped running at Zhongshan Station for 23 minutes at 9:15 a.m.

The train running from Taipei Main Station to Danshui Station stopped at Zhongshan Station due to mechanical failures. The control center first blocked the unavailable track, and the trains had to go both directions to Dansui and to Nangshijiao on one single track between Zhongshan and Shuanglian Station, and then manually drove the train to the auxiliary rail.

The incident affected approximately 5,000 passengers while the cause of this breakdown was still under investigation as of yesterday, the Department of Rapid Transit Systems (DORTS) said.

The Wenhu Line experienced two mishaps Wednesday. First the train stopped working for nearly two hours from 10:21 a.m. at Zhongshan Junior High School Station due to faults on electronic supply. Passengers trapped in the compartment for 52 minutes, tormented by the heat and tight space, began cursing out loud when they were finally evacuated. Another minor accident took place later at 7:24 p.m. due to the same issue: electronic supply. The train reportedly broke down for three minutes, and the system went back to normal operation.
