Jobless man wins a NT$500 mil. jackpot

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Unemployed and middle-aged with the burden of feeding a family of four, one might feel like there is no hope; unless one actually wins the lottery.

A jobless man hit the NT$500 million jackpot on Power Lottery last month, finding his happily-ever-after - at least fiscally. The 45-year-old winner, who was fired six months ago and is still struggling to seek work, asked his father to purchase 10 lottery tickets for him, worth NT$1,000, right before a job interview.

When the lottery show was broadcast, the winner's father was sitting in front of the TV, and nearly had a heart attack when he found out he had won the big prize. He quickly notified his son, who was washing dishes in the kitchen at that time, reported local media.

“Every cloud has a silver lining,” yelled the lucky man when he validated his ticket, said Huan Chi-Yi, official from the Taiwan Lottery, adding that this sudden wealth did not overwhelm the winner as his determination to find a job was unchanged.

To make the best of his newfound wealth, the winner donated NT$2 million to charity, gave NT$200,000 to the lottery store where he bought the winning ticket, located in Luzhou, Taipei County, and put the rest into his bank accounts and towards insurance.
