Fireworks to promote int'l flower expo

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Thousands of pyrotechnics will light up Taipei's skyline for the 2009 Taipei Fireworks Festival tomorrow night as part of a huge event celebrating the international flower show that the city will host next year.

The festival, expected to begin at 3 p.m., will feature many family activities throughout the afternoon, including street performers, live bands, a basketball shooting competition and an art exhibition.

A total of different 21,800 fireworks, in the shapes of 120 kinds of flowers will be launched at 8:30 p.m., on the north side of Zhongxiao Bridge and along Danshui River's gates numbers three to five. Officials recommend watching the spectacle at the wharf between Taipei's Min-Shen West Road and Huan-Ho North Road.

The 30- minute display will commemorate the 365-day countdown to the opening of the 2010 Taipei International Flora Exposition at the Taipei Arena, according to Taipei City's Department of Information and Tourism (DIT). The Flora Expo is expected to create not only immense business opportunities, but also increase Taiwan's international appearances.

The fireworks show, usually held in the summer, was postponed after southern Taiwan was devastated by Typhoon Morakot, said Tou Chung-hua, Taipei City Tourism commissioner.

Starting at 6:30 p.m., cars will be blocked from entering the area bordered by Shi-ming Avenue to the south, Guei-Suei Road to the north, Yen-Ping North Road, Nang-jin West Road and Ta-cheng Road to the east and Huan-Ho North Road to the west.

The car-free zone could expand south of Zhongxiao West Road after 8 p.m., according to organizers. Additional traffic controls will be in place starting at 8 p.m., for motorcyclists and pedestrians crossing Zhongxiao Bridge, said Fan Yang-ning, director of Taipei City Police Department's Traffic Division.

Organizers urge visitors to take public transportation. For more information, visit: www.2009fireworks.taipei.gov.tw/
