Citibank, United Way appeal to the public for fund-raising

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The 15th Citi-United Way Fund Raising Campaign launched on Tuesday in Taipei, appealing to more donors and is hoping to raise NT$100 million this year.

In the last five years, some social welfare groups have encountered fund-raising difficulties and requested more grants from the United Way of Taiwan (UWT). Due to the economic recession and competition from other charitable organizations, UWT fell behind their needed grants and only 49% of the demand has been met.

Morris Li, chairman of Citibank Taiwan Ltd., in cooperation with UWT announced in a press conference that they would like to invite more donors this year to help them reach the NT$100 million goal to assist more people in need.

Every donor benefits 10 recipients, according to the data provided by the Citi-United Way campaign. In 2008, 40 thousand donors helped over 400,000 people, including the mentally and physically handicapped, women, elderly and children. An NT$3,000 donation will allow a single, elderly individual to get a month of meals, or two immigrant wives three months of social adjustment classes.

With the financial crisis affecting Taiwan, even though money donations have decreased, the number of contributors increased. There has even been a trend in younger generations becoming donors, including middle school students and one donor 3 years of age, according to Edward Y.D. Way, Chairman of UWT,

Chen Hei-Peng, principal of Xu Hui Middle School, attended the press conference and pointed out that students want to be intelligent donors.

The mother of the youngest donor, Wu Jun-you, has been donating to the Citi-United Way Fund Raising Campaign on his behalf since the day he was born. Mrs. Wu believes that children who have compassion will not go on the wrong track.

To encourage more contributors, Citi-United Way Fund Raising Campaign, which ends February 28, 2010, this year released the “Taiwan Leopard Cat doll” as an appreciation gift. A credit card donation of NT$3,000 will receive a “Love Baby Tiger Leopard Cat doll.” A donation of NT$5,000 will receive another type of Leopard Cat doll.

People can donate through the Internet or by phone.
