Firecrackers spark fire, kill woman in her home

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A woman was killed at her home on the evening of Mid-Autumn Festival in a blaze that was likely sparked by nearby firecrackers, local media reported yesterday.

Witness were cited as claiming they had spotted people lighting firecrackers earlier in the evening but attributed the ensuing burning smell to neighbors' barbequing, a recent holiday tradition. After the fire was put out half an hour later, the victim was discovered trapped under a collapsed roof, said a TVBS report.

The woman, 31, the daughter of a retired teacher, suffered from mild mental retardation and lived in the dormitory adjacent to the school, the report added.
