Student corporal punishment illegal even if with parent's consent: Taipei DOE

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Parental consent or even request for corporal punishment of students for misconduct has no law-binding basis therefore the act of punishment will still be considered illegal, said Taipei County department of education (DOE) yesterday.

If any school or cram institutions violate the law, either the students or the parents can take legal actions, emphasized Su Chen-rong of county-level DOE.

The department added that it will probe into the case where a student was forced to laugh for an hour until he vomited at a local cram school. If the act proves to be corporal punishment, the student's family is entitled to sue the school.
