Ex-president's last statement

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Former President Chen Shui-bian's "last statement" follows:

As president of the people of Taiwan, I insisted on Taiwan's independence, adhering to the principle that Taiwan and China are two countries on the two sides of the Taiwan Strait. I would rather die than be a slave to the Chinese. The people of Taiwan should have dignity and be brave.

I am not corrupt. I committed no crime. Facing Ma (Ying-jeou), director of the (special administrative) district (like the one in Hong Kong) and the political persecution by the Chinese (Nationalist) Party as well as by its judiciary, I will never submit. Nor will I tolerate insult and any unlawful trial. Therefore, I hereby dismiss my defense attorneys, withdraw my request for witnesses, and request Tsai Shou-hsun to sentence me to life imprisonment. I will not appeal. I can be put into prison at once. I don't want the circus (trial) to be continued.

I wish the mass rally on May 17 a success. Tsai Ing-wen (chairwoman of the Democratic Progressive Party) must be ready to be sent to jail. I call on all Taiwan's indigenous civic bodies to pool resources and join forces to take part in the rally in Taipei to raise an uproar against Ma. That is the important step to be taken toward the grand solidarity of the people of Taiwan.

In order to express my support for (the) May 17 (rally), I, even though in detention, will start refusing to take food from this day onward to May 17, until after I can see our countrymen and volunteers all across the nation come to Ketagalan Boulevard in Taipei for the great rally and succeed in protesting against Ma and saving Taiwan.

Can the mass rally on May 17 save Taiwan? It is out of the question. Protesting against Ma won't save Taiwan, either. Please wake up, those members of the Democratic Progressive Party and bigots planning to go to Ketagalan Boulevard. Your protest against the current president will only indicate further that the DPP again wants to provoke more controversies and chaos, and may incur possible violence on that day.

Chen Shui-bian is a PARIAH AND DISGRACE to the international Chinese community. Until now he has not repented and is once again on a hunger strike.
