Traffic jams snarl Taipei roads over DPP rally march against Chen YunlinIn order to prevent the protesting DPP supporters from clashing with local people, the Taipei City Police launched emergency traffic controls yesterday morning at Chungshan North Road, Beian Road, and Hsinsheng High-Elevated Bridge, asking drivers to divert to Chengde Road, Fushing North Road and Chungching North Road. During weekday rush hours, it is difficult for many drivers to divert to other roads in time, leading to traffic jams at roads adjacent to the Chungshan North Road leading to the Grand Hotel, where Chen and his delegation are staying As a result, a normally 30-minute drive took two hours to complete in some cases. Meanwhile, tourists residing in the Grand Hotel struggled to return to the hotel yesterday afternoon, blocked outside by traffic control. The hotel also advised potential guests to think twice about whether to check in these few days, because they may be subject to tight security and traffic control when they go to or leave the Grand Hotel. Also yesterday afternoon, schools in PoAi Special District were forced to close classes ahead of regular schedule, allowing parents of students to pick up their children home at noon time. Students were plagued by the noise generated by the protesting masses surrounding the Ketagalan Blvd. Those patients seeking emergency medical treatment at the Taipei National Taiwan University Hospital were also blocked from reaching the hospital by the mass of protesters occupying roads leading to the hospital. | ||||||||||||||||||||
