Taipei City’s 10,000-person BBQ called off, reorganized

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taipei City has called off a “10,000 people” outdoor barbecue activity for next week’s Mid-Autumn Festival after the Cabinet’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) objected citing pollution concerns, the Apple Daily reported yesterday.

Taipei had originally called on its residents to gather at a riverside park to barbecue on the night of the festival, but now it has instead designated 11 sites in the city where people can barbecue on that day.

In Taiwan, having a barbecue is now a traditional activity for the festival, which falls on Sept. 13 this year.
