Majority caught in Taipei sex parties have HIV

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Up to 51 percent of 83 people arrested at sex parties in Taipei City last year were found to have acquired HIV, the northern city’s Department of Health said yesterday.

Thirty-two of the 83 people caught last year were immediately found to have contracted the disease, while 10 of the remaining 51 were also confirmed three months later to have fallen victim to the disease, the department said in a press statement.

HIV, which leads to AIDS, is mostly spread through unprotected sex, according to the department, which added that more than 77 percent of Taipei City’s AIDS patients contracted the disease through sex.

The use of condoms can effectively prevent contracting AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases, as suggested by the World Health Organization (WHO), the department said.
