Child shoplifters caught red-handed

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A 9-year-old boy, accompanied by his cousins, was caught stealing while trying to sneak 3 packs of instant noodles into his bag yesterday in a supermarket in Taipei, according to the United Daily.

An employee restocking shelves spotted the young children behaving suspiciously and notified a co-worker to keep an eye on them. When the children slipped the three packs of noodles, worth NT$13 each, into a bag, they were immediately confronted.

The boy and his accomplices burst into tears upon hearing that the salesman had notified the police. They were then escorted to the police station where they remained for 7 hours.

The owner, however, said that he was not going to press charges against the young children. Police noted that the young boy and his cousins had not left the premises.

In fact the owner would most likely be legally unable to press charges, as minors under the age of 14 are not liable for larceny under the law, the daily said. At around 6 p.m., the children were released to their parents, who sternly admonished them for what they had done.
