TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A remote-controlled model aircraft crashed into a high-rise building in Hsindian C

ity, south of Taipei yesterday, causing a fire that left six people injured.

The six casualties, including an 89-year-old man, were rescued by firemen and rushed to two nearby hospitals for treatment. Meanwhile, the suspect, surnamed Hsieh, was taken by the police for further investigations.

According to the Fire Bureau of Taipei County, the blaze was reported at around 8 a.m. yesterday when a radio-controlled model jet fighter lost control and crashed through a glass window on the 28th floor of a skyscraper at Huan-he Road in Hsindian City, Taipei County, causing a blaze that led to injuries of six residents on the floor.

A total of 79 residents were evacuated to safer places after local fire brigades dispatched 46 fire trucks and nearly 100 firefighters to the scene.

Some witnesses to the fire said that they heard a loud bang before clouds of smoke puffed out from a high-rise building. Other witnesses said that they saw a couple flying a model plane at a riverside park, only 500 meters away from the building before the crash.

According to the firemen, the fire was brought under control in half an hour, and they found the remains of the aircraft model in a gutted room that smelled strongly of gasoline. Hsieh was taken into police custody yesterday and would face justice if proven to have violated public safety.
